🦴✨ Bone Health & Menopause: My Wake-Up Call ✨🦴

When I started writing about bone health, I thought of it as something “out there” — a risk women face after menopause. But now, it’s personal. I recently had my own bone scan, and the results showed osteopenia. My doctor recommended Boniva, along with regular physical exercise, to protect my bones and prevent progression to osteoporosis.

I share this not to alarm, but to remind us all: bone loss is silent, but it is real.

What Osteopenia Means

Osteopenia is the stage before osteoporosis, when bone density is lower than normal but not yet in the fracture-risk zone.

Many women don’t know they have it until they get a bone scan (DEXA).

Estrogen plays a major role in keeping bones strong, which is why the menopausal transition is a critical time for bone health.

What We Know About Estrogen & Bone Loss

Estrogen helps regulate bone remodeling. When estrogen drops after menopause, bone breakdown speeds up.

👉 Women can lose up to 20% of their bone density in the first 5–7 years after menopause.

Treatment & Prevention Options

Medication
My doctor recommended Boniva, a bisphosphonate that helps slow bone breakdown. Other medications may be considered depending on health history.

Exercise
Weight-bearing and resistance training are essential for keeping bones and muscles strong. Even walking, light weights, or yoga can help.

Nutrition
Calcium and vitamin D remain cornerstones, but protein intake and limiting alcohol/smoking are also important.

Monitoring
Regular scans can help track progress and guide treatment.

My Takeaway

As a 64-year-old woman now living with osteopenia, I’m choosing to see this diagnosis not as a setback, but as a call to action.

Just like heart and brain health, bone health requires attention and care — and it’s never too late to start.

Everyday Rituals That Support Strength

At Vibrant Living Therapeutics, we talk often about resilience. To me, resilience now means protecting the framework that holds me up — my bones.

That’s why I’m doubling down on daily rituals:

  • Movement every day
  • Balanced, colorful meals
  • Consistent self-care routines

And while our InnerRadiance Skincare line focuses on the outside, it’s also a daily reminder that care and strength start from within.

✨ Final Thought

If you haven’t had a bone scan, talk to your provider. Knowledge is power.

Strong bones are the foundation for living vibrantly — with freedom, confidence, and independence.
