Vaginal pH effects: menopause, UTIs illustration.

My UTI Journey (and Why I’m Finally Talking About It)

This fall, my husband and I celebrated our anniversary with a beautiful 10-day trip through Oregon — wineries, the coast, stunning views. Exactly what we both needed.

What I didn’t need was what came home with me.

Somewhere between Newberg and Cannon Beach, I started feeling that familiar pressure…

At first I ignored it — chalked it up to travel, dehydration, maybe a little too much coffee and sparkling water (Topo Chico lovers, I see you). But deep down, I suspected the truth:

I probably already had a brewing UTI, and — let’s be honest — anniversary intimacy certainly didn’t help. 😱😭😱

I’m a pharmacist.

I’ve counseled thousands of patients on UTIs.

And yet… here I was, uncomfortable, surprised, and honestly a little frustrated.

Little did I know that this was about to become one of the biggest “aha moments” of my midlife health.

When the Symptoms Didn’t Go Away

I finished a 7-day course of Macrobid.

I did all the “right” things.

But I still had urgency. That “something’s off” feeling.

So I went back.

This time, we did a culture — and it came back Enterococcus.

That’s when everything clicked into place.

Not only was I dealing with the wrong bacteria for Macrobid…

I was also dealing with menopausal bladder changes that no one really warned us about.

The Real Root of Midlife UTIs: pH + Estrogen + Vaginal Flora

Here’s the part no one talks about:

When estrogen drops, vaginal pH rises.

Lactobacillus decreases
The entire microbiome shifts
Tissue becomes thinner and drier
The urethra becomes more vulnerable
Pathogenic bacteria flourish

And suddenly:

The woman who never got UTIs starts getting them.

Or they keep coming back.

Or symptoms never fully resolve.

It’s not “bad luck.”

It’s not “doing something wrong.”

It’s biology.

This was the first time I truly understood it in my own body — not just in a textbook.

My Turning Point: Rethinking Bladder Care in Menopause

I decided I was done with the cycle of “treat → recur → worry.”

So I approached this the same way I approach everything else in women’s health:

✔ science

✔ physiology

✔ root cause

✔ empowerment

✔ and a little humor to stay sane

Here’s what I learned (and now teach).

🌿

1. Vaginal Estradiol Is a Game-Changer

I had been dabbling with estradiol externally… once a week… when I remembered…

But when my NP emphasized using it internally and consistently, everything shifted.

Estradiol:

Thickens tissue
Restores glycogen
Feeds good bacteria
Lowers pH
Reduces UTI recurrence by up to 60%

It truly is foundational.

🦠

2. A Women’s Probiotic Supports pH Balance

I’d been taking multivitamins, collagen, all the usual wellness things… but not a targeted women’s probiotic.

Introducing Lactobacillus strains again helps:

re-acidify vaginal pH
protect the urethra
support the bladder opening
reduce pathogenic bacteria

Her Florastor became part of my daily routine.

3. D-Mannose Is Not “Fad Science” — It’s Real

For years I saw D-mannose on shelves and mentally filed it under “supplements my patients ask me about.”

But now that I understand it more deeply — and personally — I’m convinced it’s one of the most effective tools for preventing recurrent UTIs.

D-mannose acts like a decoy sugar that bacteria stick to.

You just flush them out.

No systemic effects.

No resistance.

Just brilliant physiology.

I started taking NOW Foods Mannose + Cranberry daily — and it’s become part of my maintenance plan.

4. Coffee & Sparkling Water Are Not Your Friends During a Flare

I know, I know.

Trust me — I had a moment of silence for Topo Chico.

But during irritation:

carbonation
acidity
caffeine
all worsen bladder inflammation.

So I temporarily switched to:

chamomile tea
peppermint tea
still water

It made a bigger difference than I expected.

🌸

5. External Vulvar Care Matters More Than You Think

Menopause doesn’t just thin the vagina — it affects the entire vulvar area, including the tissue surrounding the urethra.

Dry, fragile skin there can worsen:

burning
urgency
irritation after wiping
discomfort during urination

During my healing phase, I realized how important external moisturizers are.

This is exactly why I created Vagi LipTwist and Vegan Vagi LipTwist in the first place — gentle, clean vulvar balms to nourish and comfort the tissue we rarely talk about.

And yes — I used mine daily.

It made a noticeable difference in comfort during healing.

💜

My 14-Day Bladder Healing Reset

I created a whole 14-day reset calendar (which I’ll share in The Menopause Collective) that includes:

Estradiol schedule
Probiotic key times
D-mannose + cranberry
Coffee reduction
Chamomile/peppermint tea
External vulvar moisture
Travel tips
Hydration goals

It’s the plan I wish someone had handed me in September.

What I Want Every Midlife Woman to Know

⭐ You are not alone.

⭐ UTIs are not your fault.

⭐ Menopause changes everything — including your bladder.

⭐ Healing is absolutely possible.

⭐ External vulvar care is self-care, not vanity.

⭐ Ask for a culture — every time.

⭐ You deserve comfort, confidence, and answers.

If my journey helps even one woman feel less frustrated, less scared, and more empowered — then the whole Oregon UTI saga was worth it.

And if you want the full 14-day plan, pH guide, or personalized bladder checklist…

You know where to find me. 💜
